What it is
Percentage gap between current price and the highest price reached in the last 12 months. A distance of −15% means the stock is correcting 15% from its yearly peak.
How to read it
Small distance (−5% or less) suggests a stock near its highs — positive momentum but little margin of safety. Large distance (−30% or more) signals a notable drawdown — possible opportunity (bounce) or downtrend to avoid (dig deeper).
Common reference points
- Near highs — strong momentum0 to −5%
- Mild correction — healthy−5 to −15%
- Correction — caution−15 to −25%
- Bear market — severe drawdown< −25%
Orders of magnitude, not a rule: the same number does not mean the same thing from one sector to the next.
What it does not tell you
The 1-year ATH is arbitrary — a stock can be −40% vs its historical ATH but 0% vs its 1-year ATH if the decline is old. Always cross with long-term trend (MA200) and fundamentals.
