Institutional ownership (13F)
13F ownership
What it is
Positions disclosed by US managers running more than $100M: pension funds, asset managers, hedge funds. The "13F" is the form they file with the US regulator every quarter.
How to read it
It's the CHANGES that inform, not the amounts: one fund doubling its position, another exiting entirely. Very high institutional ownership signals a closely followed stock; very low, one still ignored or deemed too small.
What it does not tell you
🪤 THE DATA LAGS BY 45 DAYS. Filings arrive up to 45 days after quarter-end: what you're reading may have been sold weeks ago. 🪤 SHORT positions are NOT disclosed — you only see one side of the bet. Non-US managers and those under $100M don't appear either.
