What it is
Everything the company owns: cash, receivables, inventory, facilities, brands, goodwill.
How to read it
It's the denominator of return on assets: how much profit each dollar of assets generates. Useful for comparing efficiency within a sector.
What it does not tell you
A sum of heterogeneous book values, some historical, some revalued. An identical total can hide very different realities.
