What it is
Everything the company owes: borrowings, suppliers, taxes payable, pension obligations, future lease payments.
How to read it
Against total assets, it shows how much of the company is financed by third parties rather than its shareholders.
What it does not tell you
Some real commitments — guarantees, pending litigation — appear only in the notes and escape this total.
