What it is
Goodwill is the premium paid when acquiring a company, above the value of its identifiable assets. Intangibles are assets with no physical form: brands, patents, licences.
How to read it
Large goodwill points to growth built through acquisitions rather than internally. Not bad in itself, but it means the company paid up to grow.
What it does not tell you
🪤 This asset is only worth what the acquisition actually delivers. If it disappoints, the company must write it down — carving out a sometimes spectacular accounting loss, with no cash leaving that day.
