Major cryptocurrency price
Crypto
What it is
Price of a cryptocurrency (BTC, ETH, etc.) in USD. Market open 24/7, no circuit breakers. Historical volatility 3-5× higher than stocks. Liquidity concentrated on a few exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken).
How to read it
Bitcoin and Ethereum have become highly correlated with Nasdaq since 2020 (90-day correlation 0.7+) — they react to global financial conditions, real rates, risk appetite. The "gold 2.0" narrative has largely faded — crypto is now a long-duration risk asset.
Common reference points
- 30-day move ±5% → calm—
- 30-day move ±20% → notable move—
- 30-day move ±40% → shock—
Orders of magnitude, not a rule: the same number does not mean the same thing from one sector to the next.
What it does not tell you
Crypto remains a speculative asset with structural risks (regulation, fraud, exchange failure). Reasonable portfolio position per academic doctrine: 1-5% max. Store off-exchange (cold wallet) beyond a few thousand dollars.
